2023 Meals on Wheels NSW Innovation Awards

Winner in the category of Sustainable Practices is Albury Meals on Wheels, for their ‘Bags for the Better’ initiative.
The challenge was how to safely deliver the clients frozen meals each week in a sustainable manner, that still met the needs of the clients, identified each parcel of food for the volunteers, with a system that worked for the service.
Using the Supermarket ‘Bags for Life’ with the client’s name attached to the outside, they pack the clients meals in this in a plastic or paper bag that volunteers are donating. These are then placed in the freezer ready for the frozen delivery run. Bags can be used multiple times and the need for washing is eliminated. By recycling plastic/paper bags, they are making the whole process streamlined for their volunteers, who can easily identify each client’s package of frozen meals.
