2023 Meals on Wheels NSW Innovation Awards

In the category of ‘Sustainable Practices’:
Congratulations to Forbes and District Meals on Wheels, for their ‘Dine Out Cards’ initiative, which has enabled their clients to have more choice and flexibility and increased their opportunity for socialisation, thus increasing their overall wellbeing. A successful community partnership that benefits the clients, the participating local food businesses, and the service, creating stronger networking opportunities within their local community.
Another benefit is the reduced carbon footprint of the meal. They are produced in Forbes sourcing local produce and employing local people. The reduction in air pollution, administration, and packaging all help contribute to becoming carbon neutral.
After a successful 3-month trial with 6 clients, the project has now grown to over 20 clients. A load-up card was established for each client, and they select how much money they would like loaded to the card, based on a $2 contribution per meal.
The clients now have access to another service, as well as the regular Meals on Wheels service, and the opportunity to socialise at a subsidised rate with family and friends at a time that suits them.
