Social Wellbeing
Social wellbeing is vital in everyday life and is defined as sharing, developing and sustaining positive relationships. Social wellbeing is having a sense of belonging to a community and making positive contributions to society.
There are several benefits of social connections which includes higher self-esteem, strengthen your immune system and having a better quality of life. Without social connection, loneliness can have health consequences including disruptions to sleep, elevated blood pressure and increased stress.
Older and vulnerable community members are typically at increased risk of isolation due to decreased mobility, more likely to live alone and experiencing the loss of family and friends.
Ways to increase social interactions can include doing activities you enjoy, join social activities, engage in new hobbies and become an active member of the community.
There are opportunities to increased social wellbeing through becoming a volunteer with Meals on Wheels. The benefit of volunteering includes becoming a part of a community, meeting other volunteers from all different age groups and backgrounds and increase self-esteem from positively contributing to the community.
