Recently, a fire at Flagstaff Group’s Unanderra location caused significant damage to their freezer facilities, impacting the meal supplier's ability to provide to Meals on Wheels services. The sudden disruption posed a serious challenge, but the Meals on Wheels network quickly rallied to ensure that those in need were not left without support.
Several Meals on Wheels services with production kitchens immediately stepped up to provide meals to those affected. Bathurst Meals on Wheels was among the first to act. Sarah Thomas, General Manager, explained, “When we heard about the fire at Flagstaff, we knew the impact it would have, not just on the services but on the individuals depending on their daily meals. We were more than willing to step up and support where we could.”
Eurobodalla Meals on Wheels, one of the affected services, was incredibly grateful for the assistance from Fairfield Food Services. Manager Alan Russell shared how the team adapted quickly to ensure minimal disruption to clients: “I was delighted by the way my staff responded, quickly addressing issues, keeping clients informed, and having a new menu up and running within 10 days.” Thanks to the swift response from services like Fairfield Food Services, clients from Sussex Inlet to Wallaga Lake were able to receive meals without interruption.
This quick and coordinated action reflects the incredible spirit of cooperation among Meals on Wheels services. “Supplying meals to regions we don’t typically service has come with its challenges,” Sarah from Bathurst Meals on Wheels added, “but the dedication of our team and the strength of the Meals on Wheels network have made it possible.”
As a community-based network, Meals on Wheels services are uniquely positioned to step in and support one another in times of crisis, ensuring no one is left behind. This response is a testament to the dedication and resilience of the Meals on Wheels network. We are proud to witness such a strong community response and thank all the services that have come together during this challenging time.
