OUR SERVICE

Blacktown Meals on Wheels provides a variety of nutritionally balanced meals to frail aged people,
people with a disability, and their carers. The service is not means tested. We are also able to assist other community members and each person is assessed as required.

At Blacktown Meals on Wheels, we enable people to live independently in their own homes. Most people prefer to live at home but, in many cases, they need support to do this. Without our services and others like them, clients are at risk of premature admission to residential aged care.

Meals on Wheels services focus on meeting the nutritional needs of clients. Further, our services provide social contact for our clients, through Social Day Restaurants and Outings. In some cases, volunteers are the only daily point of contact for clients, serving to decrease social isolation and assist in monitoring their well-being.
 
How does Meals on Wheels operate?
Blacktown Meals on Wheels service receives funding from the Department of Health. Blacktown Meals on Wheels is also made possible by the significant contribution of volunteers who deliver the meals, assist in our Social Days, and many other areas of the service. It is estimated that volunteering contributes the equivalent of $200 million funding nationally.

History

In March 1957, Sydney City Council started Meals on Wheels in NSW. In the first week, 150 meals were cooked in the Town Hall for inner city dwellers. The cost of the meal then was two shillings, which is approximately 20 cents today.
Blacktown Meals on Wheels has been servicing the Blacktown Local Government area for over 30 years.
