Bringing the King to the Doorstep: A Celebration of Community in Parkes

The Parkes Elvis Festival is a time of vibrant celebration for the town, and Meals on Wheels Parkes and Forbes ensured that no one in the community would miss out, especially those unable to attend the public events.

In a wonderful display of local partnership, several Elvis tribute artists took time out of their schedules to deliver Meals on Wheels to local clients. Adding to the spectacle, community members generously donated their classic cars, allowing the ‘Kings’ to arrive at clients' homes in true 1950s style.

Dooley Thomson, of Dooley Does Elvis, was eager to jump in from the start. “I was 100% hands up straight away, let’s go for it,” he said. “I think it’s absolutely fantastic to be out here doing what we’ve done today, delivering food to those people who need it the most”.

For many residents, the festival is a cherished tradition, but mobility or health challenges can make it difficult to participate in the town's activities. Jamie Webb, Meals on Wheels Parkes and Forbes Manager, noted the importance of the initiative: “A lot of our clients are unable to come downtown to enjoy the festival, so this is just a little way that we can bring the festival to them.”

By bringing the music, iconic jumpsuits, and gleaming chrome of classic vehicles directly to the doorsteps of clients, Meals on Wheels delivered much more than just a meal. For clients Ian and Marion Unger, the visit was the surprise of a lifetime. “It’s unique, unbelievable, and really made today,” they shared. “It’s the highlight of the year for us; it’s never happened before.”

The initiative saw Elvis tribute artists engaging with clients, sharing a laugh, and offering a "thank you very much" in exchange for the appreciation they received.

Tribute artist Maria Phillips, known as Platinum Elvis, felt the mission aligned perfectly with the legacy of the King of Rock 'n' Roll. “Elvis was all about giving back and compassion,” she remarked. “I think it's great. If they can’t get to the festival, which a lot of them can’t, they feel part of it.”

This collaboration is a shining example of how innovation in service delivery, combined with human connection, can support the health and wellbeing of older Australians. Through community spirit and personalised care, the service ensured that no one was left behind during this iconic local celebration.
