"It saved my life": Inside the Shopping Service helping Randwick Meals on Wheels clients
For 87-year-old Simon, staying in his own home means being able to keep doing the everyday things that support his independence, including choosing what goes in his fridge.
But getting to the supermarket and carrying groceries home isn’t as easy as it once was. That’s where Randwick Meals on Wheels’ Shopping Service comes in.
“The shopping service has, frankly, saved my life,” Simon says. “It allows me to remain independent in my own home.”
It might seem like a small part of the week, but having that support means Simon can continue choosing the food he enjoys without having to navigate a busy supermarket or the physical challenges of carrying groceries.
“Without it, I would have to go into aged care. It is a brilliant service,” he says.
More than a grocery delivery
Randwick Meals on Wheels’ Shopping Service has been available to clients for six years and was relaunched in June 2026.
For Jessica Hobson, Community Program Lead, the need for this kind of support often becomes apparent through the wellbeing checks volunteers conduct with each meal delivery.
“Through our meal delivery service, we often meet people who are struggling quietly at home, not knowing that more help is available,” Ms Hobson says.
“For many, getting to the shops or carrying groceries becomes increasingly difficult, but that doesn’t mean they should lose choice or independence. Our Shopping Service enables them to stay at home and not compromise on the food they like to eat.”
Clients can call through their shopping list, and the Randwick Meals on Wheels team takes care of the shop before delivering the groceries to their home for a small flat fee of $5. If someone needs a little extra help, the team can also assist with unpacking and putting groceries away.
Ms Hobson says, “It’s a simple service, but it can make a big difference to someone’s confidence, nutrition and day-to-day wellbeing.”
But the service isn’t only about getting groceries from the supermarket to someone’s kitchen.
Unlike conventional grocery delivery, the person arriving at the door is part of the local team that understands the needs of older clients and takes the time to connect. There’s a familiar face, a friendly smile and a simple “how are you?” alongside the practical help.
That personal connection can also mean noticing when something doesn’t seem quite right or when a client may need some additional support.
This is why Meals on Wheels represents More Than Just a Meal. By making everyday tasks a little easier, Randwick Meals on Wheels helps clients maintain their routines, choices and confidence to continue living independently in the homes and communities they know.
